Al Gore Inspires Me with Call to Action

October 30th, 2008 | Posted by WeCanSolveIt

By Craig S. Altemose

Last night, gathered around computer screens in dorm rooms and video projector screens in larger campus halls, students across the nation witnessed the intersection of two of the most exciting and vibrant campaigns in America focused on climate crisis: Energy Action’s “Power Vote” and the Alliance for Climate Protection’s “We” Campaign.

Power Vote's Jessy Tolkan and Al Gore

Power Vote's Jessy Tolkan and Al Gore

During their co-sponsored live webcast, I saw Al Gore congratulate and thank youth around the nation who have been tirelessly and energetically campaigning to register hundreds of thousands of their peers to vote for clean energy and climate solutions in the November 4th election.  It seemed clear to me that Vice President Gore understood that is was those of us tuning in last night who would, over the next five days, mobilize in larger and larger numbers to turn out our peers and usher in the start of their clean energy future.

I saw students leave the event inspired to take to the streets and turn-out their peers in unprecedented numbers in the closing days of the election.  In Massachusetts, Amherst College played host to students from Mt. Holyoke and University of Massachusetts-Amherst in a spirited show of cross-campus collaboration.  U Mass student Katie MacDonald was motivated by the event: “It’s great to see how our actions are having impact on a bigger stage, and contributing to larger solutions.”  Dozens of students turned out and the sign-up sheet was filled with more students eager to join the cause, and mobilize their peers.

Across the state at Boston University, students used the event to build excitement about get-out-the-vote efforts and build support for the We Campaign’s generational challenge to Repower America.  At Emerson College, dozens gathered in the campus dining hall to watch the event, while countless others watched it on television broadcast through Emerson’s television station.

Last night’s takeaway was clear: our generation knows what’s at stake.  We know the task that lies before us. We will rally our peers, turn-out the vote, and continue our efforts far beyond the election to build a clean energy future.

And we will answer Al Gore’s call, and Repower America with 100% clean electricity within 10 years.  Our futures deserve nothing less.

Powering america with 100% clean electricity is a great target. Doing it in 10 years is a very tall order.

Has WeCanSolveIt developed any concrete plans for making the conversion? I mean plans beyond writing your congressman and letters to the editor.

Think about what needs to be done - all new power plants must be clean. All existing fossil plants must be replaced or converted to clean technology. A new power transmission system must be built to deliver solar power from south to north. and much more.

I have written to the folks at “WE” on numerous occassions asking for detail, but, to date, have not received any reply.

Does anybody on this blog know what plans have been proposed by “WE”?

Is it just me? I see one area that doesn’t seem to get attention: teaching our students - tomorrow’s leaders and innovators - as much as we can about the subject and providing mechanisms for helping them get job training, continuing education, business startup incentives, and inspiration to carry the torch, so to speak.

I could say a lot more, but will conclude with, should not this particular issue get more attention as it is rather important IMHO. I have programs to address this very matter. Please contact me if interested in more details.

Sorry, must clarify. I refer to K-12 public school students.

I dont because I just visited the site for the first time tonight. I have an idea and I need help in getting the message out..In response to the question posed on this site, regarding what inspired me, I wrote the following:
Life, as we know it, will not continue to exist unless action is taken NOW. Believe me when I say this every little bit helps. Conservation is conducive to preservation. If we do our part together on this planet we can save our home before its too late. After all, its the only one we’ve got. I have a proposal to make and wish to be contacted so that I may share my ideas with a brilliant man that Ive admired since I was in middle school. I am now 29. His name is Al Gore.

LET’S PETITION OBAMA TO APPOINT AL GORE AS SECRETARY OF ENERGY. HE WOULD BE THE BEST QUALIFIED PERSON FOR THAT JOB RIGHT NOW. THE ENERGY CRISIS SHOULD BE OBAMA’S TOP PRIORITY TO SAVE THIS PLANET AND OURSELVES!

I wholeheartedly agree with this idea: LET’S PETITION OBAMA TO APPOINT AL GORE AS SECRETARY OF ENERGY. HE WOULD BE THE BEST QUALIFIED PERSON FOR THAT JOB RIGHT NOW.

He seem to be the only political figure on the landscape who is concerned with the energy crisis with proactive educational plans to keep it in front of people.

Wait a minute - I also think this is a monumental idea - but why has nothing been done about it. We can make this idea a reality by posting a petition on the home page. With so many members it would take no time at all to get signatures of more than 10,000 - more like hundreds of thousands or millions.

Yes, Al Gore would make the logical choice to run the US Dept of Energy cabinet position. Leadership to make the conversion with the electric grid means getting the right people to keep the focus on achieving results. Set time table, recruit anyalist, economists, engineers, etc. The moon project or Manhattan project means getting the right people to stay focused and complete the mission.

Frustration. I find it everywhere. Average citizens could have great ideas. But without a huge resource base to drawn upon, it’s very difficult to get your idea to someone who can understand it has potential and gather the required resources to do a trial or pilot. There may be 2 people out of 100 who can see the real value in an idea but if you can’t get to them and the other 98 tell you it won’t work; frustration, give up, and a potentially useful concept is lost.

Personal experience: I’ve sent an idea to the Society of Women Engineers and they responded positively. However not having 501c3 status or association they could not according to bylaws help. So I went to try and find an 501c3 to work with. It became a tedious, paperwork, and rejection filled 9 months. So, I have an idea, independently given some credibility. I want to help. However, when matters turn to writing a lot of proposals, grant applications, and so forth; with zero tangible results to show for that effort. I might as well go back to playing Xbox online. I don’t need the frustration.

If there were a way for people to not have to go through this experience, such would be win for everyone. For what it’s worth I have a Silver Ventureworthy rating. I don’t have experience dealing with VC. I don’t have the resources to hire lawyers and Business strategists. I can’t even get a grantwriter.

My point is that this area is another way for people to participate. If you have skills to contribute, if you have contacts or connections. If you can match people with resources. And, we have this rather large beast called the internet that can be a powerful tool for this purpose. We have people who can build those tools; not just build but are motivated to do so, and innovative in approach. I myself have such skills.

If I wait 6 months for a grant rejection I may as well just play MechWarrior online all the time. The end result is the same ultimately.

It would seem to me the quickest way to start reducing the need for oil and coal would be for every American household to have their own wind turbine. Manufactured in the U S of course.

Although clean centralised energy distribution is a good thing, I think we can do a lot more to promote individual energy production such as rooftop wind turbines and energy positive housing. This is already happening in Europe.

Friends and Associates,
Just few minutes ago, President Obama signed his energy pogramm live on TV. It is something we have been waiting for since the year 2000.
What Obama did, is magical. We use to talk about change, we dreamed about change, but no longer. Change is happening now. Everyone can help, How you can help ?
1- Be Positive in those days of doom and gloom.
2- Show others you are optimistic about the future.
3- Talk yourself into being happier.
4- Keep talking to others about the significant of Obama’s action.
5- Write about it, you will believe it.
6- Regardless how life been tough to you, smile and think it could be wose.
7- To give you a smile now… Bush is gone … Huurah… Hurrah

SCANDALS! SCANDALS! SCANDALS!

EMERGENCY! EMERGENCY! EMERGENCY!

PLEASE TELL PRESIDENT HU JINTAO IMMEDIATELY!

MANY OF THE WORST CASES OF RACIAL PREJUDICE IN WORLD HISTORY!

LONG LIVE PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA!

Barack Obama is a racial minority and does not like racism.

WORLDWIDE DISSEMINATION OF INFORMATION RELATING TO SCANDALS:

(I) I do solemnly swear by Almighty God that George W. Bush committed atrocious, racist, hate crimes of epic proportions and with the stench of terrorism which I am not at liberty to mention. Many people know what Bush did. And many people will know what Bush did—even until the end of the world. Bush was absolute evil. Bush is now like a fugitive from justice. In any case, Bush will go down in history in infamy.

(II) It is opined that Bill Clinton committed terrifying, racist, hate crimes during his presidency, and I am not free to say anything further about it. ‘Be sure your sins will find you out’ (Numbers 32:23).

(III) What if basically all racial-minority people would subscribe to the interpretations that George Herbert Walker Bush committed monstrous, racist, hate crimes while he was the President of the United States? It will eventually come out: it is only a matter of time.

(IV) I know it may be hard to believe. However, Ronald Wilson Reagan committed horrible, racist, hate crimes during his presidency.
