Green Jobs Now! Oakland Rally

Green Jobs Now! Oakland Rally

As I took in the scene at the Green Jobs Now! National Day of Action event at Mosswood Park in Oakland, California this Saturday, the feeling that struck me was hope. People sat on blankets on the grass or on lawn chairs under umbrellas, toddlers waddled around doting families, teenagers tossed footballs, and parents played catch with their kids. People were talking - talking about the issues, about what they wanted to achieve, and what they could do to help. They were talking about solutions.

The sense of camaraderie was palpable, as those who join forces in battle often feel; the people who gathered at the concert and rally wanted to collaborate, they wanted to work together, they wanted to do things that would benefit their community. Participants represented a number of different interests, from solar energy to sustainable food production to job training to human rights, yet they were united in their support for green jobs.

The idea that green jobs and a larger green economy are a solution to two major problems faced by the Oakland community - poverty and pollution - made the Green Jobs Now message all the more potent. “Green jobs, not jails,” was the rallying cry of the event, with followers raising one fist in a symbol of strength and solidarity. It was a distinctly urban perspective, and for a community that has struggled with poverty, and all of its side effects, one that conjured thoughts of the civil rights movements and struggles that found root in this city. I wondered if there would be room in the environmental movement for a “green” panther perspective; I hope so.

The Oakland Green Jobs Corps Partnership on display yesterday provided an inspiring example of a community effort to utilize the opportunities for advancement that green jobs offer. The program is aimed at young adults of color in Oakland facing barriers to employment, and gives training in green collar jobs, in the hopes of providing a pathway out of poverty. Current trainees were easy to spot at the rally, dressed in bright orange shirts and clean white hard hats. And they were all ready to share their story of hope.

As the crowd gathered to take a group photo at the end of the event, the sense of a community working together was singular. My We Campaign t-shirt stood aside Vote Solar t-shirts, Silence the Violence signs and I’m Ready banners. The feeling was one of promise and possibility, that by working to create and promote green jobs, a community could transform itself.

We still have time to “really organize” until election day with real Green Jobs Now. This time, we should put job seekers together with job providers. I am from the Cleveland OH area and the events around my area didn’t accomplish this. There are so many people who are in desperate need of viable employment, skilled work force just lying idle.

Would this organization consider joining forces with the Pickens Plan in a show of force and unity prior to election so that we can repower America “Green and Clean” with the objective of getting people employed by way of Clean energy first all while getting the Green army armed and ready for the overall housing market when it rebounds?

We have little time to waste here.

Thank you in advance for your prompt response.

Sincerely,
Della McDonald

The International Brotherhood of Electrical workers (IBEW) Local 134 in Chicago Illinois. Had it’s first renewable energy seminar. They are predicting a wave of interest in this arena and are training their members on code compliant installation techniques. The apprenticeship is looking for interested and enthusatic parties who would like to join our apprenticeship. For information please visit http://www.intechonline.org/.

In Humboldt County, we’ve benefitted from “Green Jobs” for years. Members of the California Conservation Corps have learned outdoor skills while repairing trails and doing other work in our many redwood parks. They are helping restore the natural environment and enabling people to experience the outdoors more easily. Both the state and federal government can extend programs like this by providing more funding, rather than cutting support as they have done in the recent past. Jobs and the environment go hand in hand.

Boycott ABC and their advertisers.

Here is a letter I sent to ABC on behalf of WeCanSolveIt.
———————————————————-
Because you will not run the WeCanSolveIt, Re-power America ad, my family will not watch ABC television or listen to ABC radio broadcast any longer. Consequently, we will not be seeing any of the advertisements ABC stations show. However, we will be writing to some of your advertisers to explain our position and actions to them.

Siding with the oil and coal industries will be a very costly decision for you.

You really should think about your grandchildren’s future, if not your bottom line.
